 Abstract: In this paper we propose a new topology based metric for 2D vector fields. This metric is based on the concept of feature flow fields. We show that it incorporates both the characteristics and the local distribution of the critical points while keeping the computing time reasonably small even for topologically complex vector fields. Finally, we apply the metric to track the topological behavior in a time-dependent vector field, and to evaluate a smoothing procedure on a noisy steady vector field.
