Abstract: The present work is concerned with two different applications of two types of ordered mesoporous silica hosts: the 2D hexagonal SBA-15 and the 3D cubic KIT-6. The influence of the template removal from as-made mesoporous silica on pore size engineering is discussed depending on synthesis conditions and post-synthesis treatments. In a first application, the dual pore system of SBA-15 is applied to the development of a bifunctional nanostructured solid. Palladium nanoparticles are to be deposited selectively in the micropores by employing a method of stepwise surface modification. The regioselective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde is used as test reaction to judge on the location of the nanoparticles. In a second application, the entire pore system of ordered mesoporous silicas is employed as hard template for the preparation of nanostructured Co3O4 by nanocasting. Synthesis conditions to achieve control of framework topology, porosity and dimension of the resulting samples are investigated using calcined and microwave digested silica hosts. The study was completed by analyzing the magnetic properties of the materials using SQUID magnetometry.
